Easy Sheepskin Care
Vello d'Oro Medical Sheepskin are designed to be easy on your patient and easy on you. Just a few care tips will keep your sheepskin like new.
General Maintenance
Shaking and Fluffing: Gently shake the sheepskin each day to lift and restore the natural loft (fluffiness) of the wool fibers. This resilience is what allows the sheepskin to effectively distribute pressure.
Brushing/Combing: Use a wire wool brush to comb or brush the wool regularly. This prevents the fibers from becoming matted or compacted, maintaining their optimal pressure-reducing height.
Turning: Just like the patient, natural sheepskin should be turned for optimal comfort.
Spot Cleaning and Inspection: Address any minor soiling immediately. If the sheepskin becomes heavily soiled or wet due to incontinence, it must be removed, thoroughly cleaned. See step-by-step washing instruction below.
Washing Medical Sheepskin
Machine Wash Method:
-
Load the sheepskin alone or with other sheepskin items.
-
Select the Gentle or Wool.
-
Turn Spin Speed down to a low/medium spin to prevent matting.
-
Use Lukewarm or Cool water (max temperature 100°F / 38°C).
-
Add the recommended amount of sheepskin-specific detergent.
-
Ensure the machine performs a cool rinse.
Hand Wash Method:
-
Fill a tub or basin with cool or lukewarm water.
-
Mix in your sheepskin detergent.
-
Submerge the skin and gently squeeze the wool to release dirt.
-
Soak for 5–10 minutes. Do not rub / scrub aggressively.
-
Drain and rinse with cool water until the water runs clear.
-
Gently squeeze out excess water. Do not twist like a towel.
Drying
-
Lay the skin on a towel, roll it up, and press gently to absorb moisture.
-
While the skin is still damp, gently pull and stretch the leather in all directions. This prevents shrinking or stiffness.
-
Place the skin on a drying rack or floor away from sunlight or heat sources.
-
Give the wool a quick brush with a wire pet brush while damp to fluff the fibers.
-
Once completely dry, brush to restore the fluffy "loft" of the wool.
